WHAT’S NEW IN KINGMAN

Break out the hardhats and start shoveling some dirt.  It is time to celebrate some growth in the Kingman area.  As much as the general media still likes to portray a rough economy and any negative news, I try to point out some positives here and there.

With the large influx of new construction residential permits this year, we also have several commercial projects under construction right now.

Discount Tire is opening shop soon on Stockton Hill Road right next to the IHOP.  The store is set to open some time this coming summer.

White Cliffs Senior Living on 3600 Peterson Road is currently under construction. The building is located just west of Stockton Hill Roa, near the intersection of Airway and Western.  The site will include 77 assisted living units and 30 “memory care” beds.  White Cliffs Senior Living is designed to cater to active seniors, those who need assistance with daily activities and those with dementia or other forms of memory loss.  The building is quite large and has a very clean asthetic look.  Here is a link below that will take you to a recent article posted by the Kingman Daily Miner that shows more details about the design and information about the project.

The most exciting project underway and probably my personal favorite is the new Chipotle Burrito Restaurant and Five Guy’s Burgers.  This project was a re-model of the old Blockbuster building, just south of the intersection of Stockton Hill and Airway between Walgreens and the new McDonalds.  The grand opening is set for the end of May of 2013.  I can taste the burritos as I write this blog! And, if you haven’t had a Five Guy’s Burger then you are in for a treat.  I still like In-N-Out Burger, but this burger joint offers a much different approach to the sometimes boring french fry and cheeseburger world.

Next,  the old TG&Y building at the intersection of Detroit and Stockton Hill Road just south of I-40 is being transformed in a new commercial building complex with several proposed tenants.  They are also working in conjuction with a possible hotel on the north end of the property where the old Dairy Queen used to be.  Many long time Kingmanites know the building in town very well.  It is nice to see them breaking ground and getting the building renovated.

Speaking of renovation, the old historic Brunswick Hotel in Downtown Kingman is well underway.  Werner Fleischmann from Switzerland is in the process of singlehandedly changing downtown Kingman.  He is slowly buying up old and historic buildings and fixing them up.  He has also recently purchased the old JC Pennies building on 4th and Beale from the City of Kingman.  The Brunswick is in the process of being restored to the same appearance as it was in the early 1900s while also being modernized for today’s needs. The historic hotel also plans on adding a bakery, bar and restaurant.  I am excited, as a local, to see the downtown transform with quality.  There is huge potential on Beale Street and Andy Devine for future entrepreneurs.

Another smaller downtown project is slated to open soon as well.  The Black Bridge Brewery is a small brewery located on Beale St. between 4th and 5th St.   Tim Schritter is the owner, as well as the brewer.

There are other projects currently in the works, too.  A very important project to our area for veterans is the new VA clinic.  The VA contracted with a land owner on Hualapai Mountain Road near the BLM Building to build a VA Clinic which will be around 10,000 sq. ft.  I don’t have any firm information on a date in which the building will be completed and they haven’t officially broken gound yet, but the article link below sheds some light on the project in more detail.

I am glad to see some money being thrown around in our little town of Kingman.  I hope these projects lead to bigger and better things.  Our community deserves quality projects and useful amenities.
