Mohave County: An Overview and History

Mohave County, the second largest county in Arizona, is in the northwestern region of the state. Its western border is with both California and Nevada, and is also bordered to the north by Utah. Thus, it is a melting pot of different cultures and economies as well as geographical features. A large part of Mohave County's land area is desert, but it also boasts of 1,000 miles of shoreline. These bodies of water―specificially the Colorado River, Lake Havasu and Lake Mohave―have played important roles in the economic and real estate development of the cities in the area.

When Mohave County was created in 1864, before Arizona became an official state, it originally contained portions of Nevada. This was when Mohave County area started attracting settlers and miners, after gold was discovered in its surrounding areas. The city of Kingman has been the county seat of Mohave County since 1887.

The major cities in Mohave County including the following: Kingman, Lake Havasu City, Bullhead City, Colorado City, and New Kingman/Butler. Other important communities with viable real estate include: White Hills, Dolan Springs, and Golden Valley. As of 2003, the total population of Mohave County was 179,981.

Those interested in buying land and properties in Mohave County should know that 61 percent of the land is owned by the U.S. Forest Srvice and Bureau of Land Management, 6 percent is owned by Indian reservations, 7 percent by the state of Arizona, 18 percent is owned by individuals or corporations, and 8 percent is public land.
