Lake Havasu City: Recreation
More than 2.5 million visitors flock each year to shores of Lake Havasu to enjoy the scenery, the cool waters of the lake and abundant recreational activities. Water sports, hiking, off-road opportunities and cultural and natural history are some of the attractions that draw visitors year round to both the lake and the city with the same name.
A popular tourist attraction in Lake Havasu City is the London Bridge, which crosses an eight-foot-deep man-made canal that leads from Lake Havasu on the Colorado River to Thompson Bay. It was purchased from the city of London when the bridge was being replaced in 1968 for 2.5 million dollars. The bridge was disassembled, and the marked stones were shipped to Lake Havasu City and reassembled for another 7 million dollars. It opened again in October 1971.
The city itself is a well known destination of choice for university students during Spring Break. Its reputation in the region rivals Panama City, Florida in the East. Much of the Spring Break activity centers on the London Bridge Resort Village, a British-themed tourist district directly adjacent to the Bridge. The London Bridge Resort built a large patio extending out to the channel with a swimming pool and a stage equipped with disco lighting to accommodate the Spring Break parties.
Lake Havasu City regularly hosts other major events such as boating conventions and the Western Winter Blast. Non-water fans can enjoy the many golf courses and tennis courts in the vicinity. Without a doubt, both residents and visitors can find something exciting to do in Lake Havasu City.
